Grainger’s Account Dashboard

A central location for the user’s notifications, tools, and account information on Grainger.com. From the dashboard the user should be able to review their information and complete their tasks quickly so they can get back to shopping.

Role and contribution

For this project my role was UX Visual Designer. I closely partnered with another UX Designer and several researchers from start to finish. As a team we performed a heuristic and interviews to identify problem areas, we then focused on reorganizing the navigation and content.

User Research

Our main goal for the dashboard was to create a space that would allow for tasks to be completed quickly. User’s come to Grainger mainly to shop, they don’t want to be bogged down in administrative duties.

To learn more, the UX team utilized a mix of heuristic evaluations, heat-maps, user sessions and card sorts. The heuristic highlighted a number of areas where information was inconsistent, styles were not aligned to the style guide and navigation patterns were overly cluttered. In the heat-maps and user sessions we observed users entering certain areas and bouncing quickly out. We surmised this was because they did not understand the CTA or where it would direct them.

Within these and a number or additional observations, we had a readout of the findings and sat down together to perform a card sort. Our goal was to align like information, to come up with the top five tasks that users performed and to brainstorm on widgets or cards that would help users complete their tasks quickly.

User states & Future growth

The new dashboard is designed to be customized and reorganized to suite our new learnings. The structure can also be personalized for certain types of users. A admin user may see budgeting information where a standard rights user wouldn’t. As the user grows with Grainger, their dashboard will as well.
